Book Week 2018

Dear Parents and Friends,

It’s great to see the daylight hours increasing and the sun shining more often, giving us warmer mornings and glorious afternoons. It is one of my favourite times of the year, as we wait in expectation for the buds to burst into bloom. A lot is happening in nature and a great deal more is happening around our school. This week’s newsletter certainly reflects what a hive of activity the school has been.

Thank you to our parents and carers who again came to the fore with the most generous response to the 'Hay and Hamper of Hope' initiative. It is a credit to our kids to want help our struggling farmers who are doing it incredibly tough at the moment. Well done everyone on raising $1200 that will go to buy bales of hay and help the plight of those who work on the land so we can have food on our tables.

Book Week

This week is Book Week at Star of the Sea and the library has organised quite a few lunch time activities to make Book Week fun and memorable. In particular the bi-annual Book Fair has really excited the children and it has been great to see parents and grandparents in the library buying books for home.

Unfortunately, I will be away for this week's Book Week Parade but I know it will be a grand and spectacular affair as usual. The children have been telling me all week about their costumes and who they are dressing as. There are some secrets that just can't be kept. This year's parade will again be held on the basketball courts and I hope the weather will be just perfect for you. I look forward to hearing all about it when I get back to school.

Thank you to the 78 families who have completed the DISA Survey, your time to take part in the school inventory of alignment will provide helpful data. However, I still need at least 52 more families to complete the survey in order for the feedback to be an accurate collection of parent opinion. All staff and students have done their bit. If you completed the survey can you, please spread the word and let people know how easy and interesting it is to do.

The Diagnostic Inventory of School Alignment (DISA) has been developed through the University of Southern Queensland and is designed to gather data from key stakeholders within a school community (students, staff and parents).

After the survey is completed, the collated data will be presented back to us in a report that will help the School Board form strategic directions for the future.

The entire school staff and Year 6 and 7 students completed the survey and have been given a voice.

It is essential that we get as many parents as possible to complete the survey (at least 130) in order for the data to be representative of our school. The more parents who take part in the survey, the more accurate the information will be in seeing how well aligned our school is in areas such as school successes and achievements; strategic foundations, community cohesiveness, professional learning, resource management and quality teaching and learning. To start the survey, select the appropriate survey type from the drop-down box and select the START button. The system will take you to the question page and take approximately 15-20mins to complete. After you have finished answering the questions press the SUBMIT button on the last page.

Your participation in the survey is essential in order to gather data so we can plan effectively for the future, and to compare current data with 2012 to see how far we have developed and if our alignment has improved. Ultimately your participation will form the basis for a data driven planning process to improve school cohesion and learning outcomes.

• Congratulations to Sienna Keeble who competed in the Level 5 Women’s Gymnastics State Championships on the weekend.  Sienna placed in all four apparatuses, going on to win the State Championship representing Gym West.  Well done Sienna, that is a great achievement.
• Congratulations to Eliza Clements who competed in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) State Championships on the weekend in Level 4. She placed first on floor, 4th on beam, 6th on vault and came 3rd overall in her age group/level. Well done Eliza, that is a great achievement.
• Congratulations to Sienna Nesci who competed at the Women’s Gymnastics State Championships on the weekend in Level 6.   Sienna placed first on floor and second on bars.  Well Done Sienna, that is a great achievement.
• Congratulations to the SOS girls who played in the  Henley Sharks Football team which won the 2018 football premiership.
• Congratulations to Georgie Blades, Jemma Cooper, Maddie Warren and Hayley Conlon who have been selected in the State Representative team travelling to Sydney in October to compete at the Combined Australian Netball Association Competition.  Well done to all of you, that is a great achievement!

Your Online Orders will now be processed as we receive them, at Edwardstown, and you can still opt to have your order put in your child’s classroom box or have it sent to your Business or Home address or you can collect it from the school uniform shop on Tuesdays or anytime during regular trading hours at Edwardstown

Hello Friends

Well, Spring was certainly in the air this week. The birds were singing and the smell of lawn clippings was in the air. Footy finals are here and there are still a few of the children’s and staff’s teams still in the race. Not mine…unfortunately.

Canberra Trip 2018

As I write this newsletter piece there are just seven days to go before our Middle School students and 11 staff fly to Canberra for the inaugural Star of the Sea School camp. I have been told that the weather is quite chilly at the moment with morning temperatures dipping below zero degrees. I am sure children and staff will have a great time while they are in the nation’s capital and will see some amazing things, as well as develop new friendships.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate(PACER)

Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Thank you, Audrey, and the SRC for driving our ‘Dress Like a Farmer Day’. We raised $1200, an amazing amount. Each hay bale costs $100, as does a hamper. Let’s hope it makes a small difference to those in need. A special thank you to Owens Casserly and Peter Kittle Holden for their contributions. School Aid trust is based in Queensland and is endorsed by the Australian Principal’s Association. This means our funds will be quickly put to good use. If only we could transport some of the water, we are going to experience on the weekend to those whose dams are totally dry. Let’s keep them in our prayers.

Special Day for Creation Saturday 1st September. If we all did one extra thing to care for creation this Saturday it would surely make a difference: pick up some rubbish, reuse, pat the dog, trim some plants, appreciate the rain, save our water, or check your recycle bin that it has all clean and appropriate materials in it.

Pre-Loved Shop enables the purchase of new apps to support Literacy Learning in the R-2 Classes 

Our R-2 teachers and children would like to say a big thank you to those who support our Star of the Sea School Pre-Loved Uniform Shop.

Some of the funds raised from selling the donated uniforms has enabled us to purchase and install Reading Doctor® Software on iPads used to support learning in the R-2 classes.

The Reading Doctor ® Software has six apps: Letter Sounds 1: Phonics Graphemes for Beginners; Letter Sounds 2: Digraphs, Trigraphs & Endings; Blending Sounds 1: Phonics Words for Beginners; Spelling Sounds 1: Writing Words with Phonics; Blending Sounds 1: Phonics Words for Beginners and Word Builder-The Phonics Teaching Tool.

The Reading Doctor ® Apps were created by an Australian Speech and Language Pathologist, Dr. Bartek Rajkowski. Dr. Barteck is the director of a speech and language pathology clinic in Adelaide and the software has been specifically designed to support students who are learning to read as well as those who struggle with reading while making learning fun.

The software is particularly useful as the sounds are articulated using an Australian accent. You can find out more about
