Canberra Trip 2018

At 4:20am on Wednesday 5 September, all of the middle school students had to meet at Adelaide Airport for an early morning flight to Canberra.

Some of the amazing sights we visited during our first day in Canberra included the lookout at Mount Ainslie, the Royal Australian mint (where they make all of the coins for Australia and all country around Australia), the High Court (where we were able to experience what it was like to be in an actual court room and the Australian Institute of Sport (where many of the top level sports stars train).

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,

It has been an amazing two weeks of school since the last newsletter. Much has happened and a great deal has been achieved. Last Wednesday our Year 6 and 7 students and staff left in the very early hours of the morning for the inaugural Canberra Trip. Returning Friday evening, a great deal was packed into the three days and two nights away. I know Matt Perry has written a summary of the Canberra Trip in his newsletter section, however, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Year 6 and 7 teachers and support staff for all of the planning that went into the trip, and for the care and supervision of the students while they were away. We acknowledge that we are indeed fortunate at Star of the Sea that we have staff who so willingly give of their time so that our students can enjoy such memorable experiences. Well done to all involved.

On Monday evening this week I was most fortunate to attend the Catholic School's Music Festival at the Entertainment Centre. Our school's festival choir students were a part of a 500 strong student choir who entertained us and made us all feel good. What a great night of entertainment and talent on display. I extend my thanks to Susan Ferguson our Festival Choir Trainer and Cathie Turner our Music Teacher for all of their hard work and organisation, enabling our school choir to be a part of such a spectacular event.

Last Thursday and Tuesday of this week our Year 4 students celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Fr John and Fr Phillip Marshall. Both celebrations were memorable occasions and reflected the great deal of work that went into preparing the children. Thank you Stella Foley, Barb Conlon, Marian Izzo, Sam Muir, Cathy Clark and Karen Lintern for preparing the children so well and for making sure the celebrations were well organised. Thank you also to the choir students and Cathie Turner for the music and singing at both events.

This Friday is School Photograph Day. All children are required to be in full winter school uniform. Please ensure uniforms are clean, shoes polished, and hair is well groomed for the photos.

Student Achievements

The Annual Ken Kelsie Awards were announced at this week's assembly. The Ken Kelsie was a Star of the Sea Old Scholar who won the local council literacy medal. Each year the Year 3 to Year 7 students are invited to submit a narrative writing piece and a panel of teachers judge the various entries that are always of high quality. This year Erin O'Shea (Year 5P) and Elena Tsamaidis (Year 6M) were announced winners of the 2018 Ken Kelsie Award. Congratulations to all students who submitted entries, we encourage you to keep writing and striving for quality. Please enter again next year. Thank you to Marian Izzo, Ali Rebuli and Skye Llewellyn for reading all of the entries, a mammoth task.

Prayer

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ And they answered him, ‘John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ He asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the Messiah.’ And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

Mark 8: 27-30

The same questions are relevant today: Who is Jesus? Who do you say that I am?

Do I allow Jesus to be my Messiah and set me free? If not, what is holding me back? Can I talk to him about it?

From the Deputy Principal

Hello Friends

Last week I was so very fortunate to travel to Canberra for the inaugural 6/7 Canberra trip. The trip began with a 4.15am start at Adelaide Airport on Wednesday 5 September and we arrived home at 8.30pm Friday 7 September. Given the logistics involved in flying 106 students and 11 adult’s interstate, embarking and disembarking from planes, and buses, eating, showering and sleeping, Our students did themselves, their families and our school proud with the way they conducted themselves during the entire trip. Our staff who went with them received many compliments from airline staff, bus drivers and venue staff about the students’ manners and behaviour. The questions that the children asked about our national monuments and landmarks were insightful and reflected their interest in the event.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate(PACER)

Students from our school have undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government has contributed funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

There are only 11 school days left of this term and I am sure you would agree about how fast this term has sped by. There are still so many things to look forward to during the remainder of this term such as, Sacramental Celebrations, Excursions, the Music Showcases and the Art Exhibition.

Audrey’s Story

A story of love and joining the Catholic Church

I started thinking about learning more about the Catholic faith early this year after a School Mass. I was christened Anglican, but our school has catholic faith and I thought I wanted to change to being a Catholic. At dinner that night I spoke to my parents. But how would this affect mum? Mum is Anglican and I wouldn’t want her to think I was betraying her. Mum said she wouldn’t mind and I felt so good after that chat.

After learning about the Sacraments with my Year 4 classmates throughout the year, Fr John welcomed me as a Catholic at our special Sacrament Retreat Day Mass. I felt good, proud and special. Now, after being Confirmed and making my First Holy Communion I feel like I belong.

From the APRIM

"I felt very happy" Henry

"I felt welcomed into the church" Isabella

This time of year is a highlight for us, as a Parish and school, as 80 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation in two beautiful ceremonies during the last week. These children have now started to receive their First Holy Communion. One group received First Eucharist last Sunday and at all Masses over the next two weekends, there will be joy filled Communion ceremonies. This is how the children described Confirmation.

These were some of the words the children used to describe the celebration:

Fun, excellent, love, priest, oil, eucharist, blessed, sponsor, family, gifts, shields, courage, flames, doves, knowledge, bread, wine, well – organised, chalice, hosts, right-judgement.
