From the APRIM

This week is a special one for the Foley family. My youngest son, Nick, is marrying the love of his life; the gorgeous Georgia. For me, as a mother of three sons, she brings a wonderful ray of sunshine into our home. Sometimes we call her hurricane, as she is so full of life. I now have two beautiful daughters-in-law. How blessed am I? Do you remember your own wedding day?

Did you use 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 at your wedding? St. Paul’s hymn is central to the very nature of true Christian love and concludes; Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Ed Sheeran continues this in his songs: “When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes, it is the only thing that makes us feel alive.”

I hope love supports you in this wonderful year of 2019.

Prayer.jpg

Prayer

Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue. He read from Isaiah:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Luke 4:16-21

From the acting Deputy Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,

A warm welcome back to the start of the new school year. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. I had a wonderful time with my family and friends down at Aldinga and Swan Reach experiencing the outdoors and the adventures that brings with it. There is nothing better than breaking routines, having no alarms, no internet access (at times), being on the water and enjoying family time, board games and cards. Now back to reality!

The students have appeared to have settled in well and many reported how excited they are to be in their new classrooms. We especially welcome our new students and their families. Our Reception students start a new chapter in their school life and I wish them every success here at Star of the Sea. It brings me back to my daughter Lilah’s first day of Reception last year when the teacher on duty went to console her as she was weeping and saying something under her breath. The teacher assumed she was saying Mummy, I want my mummy, but she was quickly corrected and replied, No…. I want my money, my money for the tuckshop! She well and truly was ready for school and wanted her independence from day one.  However, this is not always the case for our students so I have included a link from one of Australia’s leading parenting educators, renowned author and founder of Parenting Ideas website. I invite you to read his article on ‘The top five parenting tips for this year,’ included in this newsletter or access the link https://www.parentingideas.com.au

In summary he suggests to

  • Switch on your kids strengths
  • Balance kids extra- curricular activities
  • Focus on friendships
  • Give kids tools to manage anxious moments and
  • Develop rights of passage

Each week I will share an insightful message from Michael Grose around positive parenting and the challenges we face these days as parents.

2018 Assemblies

As a school we gather fortnightly for assembly on Wednesday afternoons at 1:50pm.  At our first assembly, next Wednesday 6th February, we will officially welcome our new 2018 students, SRC Reps and School Captains. We welcome you all to join us next week.

Building Project

The building project is at the Design and Consultation stage and we are looking forward to earthworks beginning in late May or early June of this year. As you know it will be a two storey building that will occupy the space where the current access ramp is situated.

Connecting the Mercy Convent will be an ‘atrium’ space. On the lower level floor there will be a multipurpose space and a Music Suite and on the upper floor three general-purpose classrooms.  The upper floor will connect, to the atrium space allowing for "indoor/outdoor learning"opportunities. The new building will also contain a lift allowing access between the lower level of the school and the convent court yard level. The building project will also include widening of the corridors in the McKillop building and connecting the current Year Four classrooms to the McKillop building. I will keep the school community informed as to the progress of our build and we look forward to exciting times ahead.
