Staff First Aid Training

During the school closure day last week all Star of the Sea staff took part in our First Aid refresher training. During the course we were trained in CPR and defribulation using an AED device (Automatic External Defribulator), treatment for anaphylatic shock and the delivery of an Epi Pen, and how to treat bleeding wounds.

Money from the Used Uniform Shop has been kindly donated to purchase an Automatic External Defribulator for the school. The device will be housed in an external location for emergency use during school time and after hours.

Further information will be issued when we receive the AED device.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome back to the start of Term 3! I hope everyone enjoyed the opportunity to have a break from the routine of school and you managed to keep out of the cold and rain. The holiday rain has been most welcome to our gardens and hopefully will hold us in good stead when the warmer weather arrives. I am pleased to report the children have returned to school in good spirit and have managed to shake off the coughs and cold bugs that were so prevalent last term. The teachers are also back on deck re-energised and fresh, and we look forward to another term of fun and exciting learning opportunities.

Welcome to Jessica Izzo who will be teaching in Reception, taking over from Breanna Brockman. We are very fortunate to have Jessica join our staff having recently returned from teaching Reception in London. Jessica is also an old scholar of Star of the Sea and knows our school and parish very well.

We also welcome back Anthony Pigliacell. Anthony completed a contract position at St Joseph's Payneham and looked after Year 4I for several weeks while Marian Izzo was on leave last term. Anthony is teaching Year 3 for the remainder of the year, taking over from Nikki Hall who left at end of Term 1 to have her baby. Welcome Anthony to Star of the Sea.

Star Outreach Community Kitchen

The Star Outreach Community Kitchen has been operating for several years assisting families with meals in times of need. This term the Community Kitchen will operate differently and allow families needing support to access meals with greater discretion and confidentiality.

The Star Outreach Committee has purchased an upright freezer that is situated in the Canteen area. The freezer is stocked with home cooked meals, baked goods and dry foods. The vision for the Community Kitchen Freezer is for families who may be experiencing a serious illness in the family, the loss of a family member, the birth of a new baby or anyone who is just finding things a little tough at the time, being able to visit the freezer and take a meal or meals without having to let anyone know.

The Outreach Community Kitchen freezer is now up and running thanks to the generous response of over 45 families who have been rostered to provide meals. Please spread the word and let others know. If you know of anyone who may benefit you may want to act on their behalf; this can be for anyone in the community, neighbours, grandparents and parishioners.

Thank you to the Star Outreach Committee for supporting this initiative and in particular thank you to Kareena Spencer (Alisha Year 3H and Nathan Rec L) for driving the project and for having the vision to expand our outreach program.

I would also like to thank Gaganis Bros for sponsoring the Community Kitchen and providing us with containers and dry food free of charge.

Finally thank you to the volunteers who have generously committed to making meals. If you would like to be a part of the Community Kitchen roster please contact the office and they will pass on your details.

ICAS EXAMS CONDUCTED BY UNIVERSITY OF NSW

Below is the time table of dates for ICAS exams for this year. If you would like your child to take part in any of these exams, please enrol via QKR before Thursday 8 August 2019. Exams on offer include Science, Writing, Spelling, English and Maths. Children from all over Australia, New Zealand and other countries in our region take part in theses exams. Once names are confirmed I will spend some time with the students prior to the tests guiding them on how they are conducted. This will be important for those attempting the tests for the first time. From the Deputy

Hello friends

I extend a very warm welcome back to school to everyone. 

We extend a very warm welcome to our students and families starting with Mrs Hinge and Mrs Hetherington this term.

I trust that the term break provided families with an opportunity to relax, unwind and connect with each other. I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days in our beautiful Barossa Valley. These couple of days provided a great opportunity to witness the valley in the midst of winter and taste some of the local delights. Maggie Beer’s farm and the tasting platters were a highlight for me. 

It is great to be back at Star of the Sea and whilst I had a fantastic Term Two and enjoyed many, varied, new and wonderful learning experience is it is great to be back here and witness the development and growth in all the students during the past term.

What a change in scenery to come back to for this term. The building works are in full swing with much of the earthworks being carried out, even as I write this newsletter piece.

‘At this moment I could see and feel new hopes and dreams being reborn….’

These words were spoken by Losa, a client of Catherine House, Catholic Charities, ‘Supporting Women out of Homelessness’. At our SRC meeting we discussed the upcoming Feast of the Assumption and we discussed what initiative we could undertake in Mary’s honour. The student reps suggested running a drive to support Catherine House across Weeks Three to Five. Catherine House have a wish list and they were delighted that we want to support them. Each class will have a laundry basket to fill and class teachers will send you suggestions of something you could donate. When someone leaves Catherine House they are presented with a basket to help them set up house. There are stories of inspiration on their website and in their newsletter, which is available from your class teacher. https://catherinehouse.org.au/ Happy shopping.

Please join us to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption at Mass, followed by Morning Tea and Toddler Playtime, on Thursday 15 August at 9:30am. This is a Holy Day of Obligation and we have invited the Parish to join us.

At enrolment interviews and parent meetings I often talk about communication and how it is the essential factor in any strong relationship – the school/home partnership is no different. Therefore, sound dialogue with the school, in particular, your child’s teacher is paramount. I understand that you are your child’s advocate, however, do not confuse your role as one of ‘rescuer’ when something goes wrong. This will not help your child in the long run. If we want our children to be resilient and independent people, they need the opportunity to develop skills such as grit and persistence. Giving your child the chance to problem solve, independently and the ability to deal with mistakes will enable them to develop a healthy set of strategies when faced with dilemmas. 

It is also important to recognise that if your son or daughter is experiencing difficulty with another child (which does and will happen), please communicate with your child’s class teacher. This is always the best option. We will always listen and follow up to address respective matters. Approaching another child or phoning parents to complain about their child is not good practice and is fraught with problems. It has been my experience over the years that most issues and problems can be resolved when we know of matters early. Please use the class teacher or the school's leadership team as a sounding board.

Commencing July 2019, the School’s Bpay Biller Code is changing from 46698 to 297911. There will be a transition period where both BPay Biller Codes will work. So, when your school fees statement is sent home early next week via child/ren, please make time to change your regular school fee payment over to the new Biller Code. Please note that your individual “Reference Number” has NOT changed.

Once you receive your school fees statements, please review. If you are making regular payments from either a bank account or credit card, please ensure your payments are sufficient to cover any additional fees. Otherwise you will need to make additional payments to cover these fees via Bpay, QKR or payment to the School Office as they become due. This will ensure your school fee account is cleared by the end of the year.

Just a reminder: Parents/Caregivers who contribute at least $250 for a single child family or $300 for multiple child family to the Planned Giving Programme of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Henley Beach for the 2019 calendar year may apply for a full rebate of the School Capital Levy.

Application forms are available from the School Office. You will need to take the form to the Parish Office for approval.

Baptism and Playgroup Family Mass Sunday 18th August @ 9:30am

Please join us for a special mass to celebrate the youngest members of our faith family. Families with little ones are warmly invited to gather together as they begin to crawl, walk and grow in God’s love.

Following mass join us for a shared morning tea with play activities for the children. A lovely opportunity to meet other parents from our parish in a relaxed environment.

Everyone is invited to bring a plate to share.

Baptismal team members are very welcome.

 

Sport News

Auskick
During Term 3, the SANFL will be hosting the Auskick program on the SOS Oval, on Wednesday afternoons, starting 31 July and finishing 25 September. Each session will go for an hour starting at 4pm.  

Soccer
NWJSA End of season Soccer Carnival, Saturday, 14 September 8.30am-3.30pm at Jubilee Reserve, West Lakes Shore.  Players from Adelaide United and Adelaide Olympic will be there on the day along with show rides, stalls, etc.  Stay tuned for further information from your coaches.
