From the Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,

As schools, teachers and parents we should be encouraging our children to grow without hurry towards adulthood. There is plenty of time for children to have access to the latest mobile phone, the latest games and toys or have extravagant birthday parties, or go to the movies as boyfriend and girlfriend.  In recent weeks I have had to speak to students and deal with issues that lead me to believe that some of our children are growing up too quickly and our society is placing enormous pressure on them to experience what they’re not yet ready for. Sonya Ryan in her presentation several weeks ago was quite clear when discussing when children should be permitted to have social media accounts. If you would like to know more, I encourage parents to visit the eSafety Commissioner web site  or better still get your children off all social media.

In addition to this, there is also another concerning element that has made it into the lives of our children and that is the notion of ‘overload’. Their day can suffer from overload when they go from school to basketball practice to music lessons to a quick meal then homework and often over seven days a week. Of course, organised activities can offer a host of benefits for children. They can foster social skills and provide opportunities for play and exercise. They can teach sportsmanship, self-discipline and conflict resolution. They can promote cultural enrichment.

However, the research also tells us that children’s activities should be scheduled in moderation according to age, temperament, ability and interests. The activities chosen should be for the child’s gain not the parents. Our children should never be involved in a multitude of activities because it boosts our self-esteem or simply because we had to do them when we were children or, we missed out as children so our children will “do it all”.

From the Deputy Principal

Hello Friends

We certainly have had a little taste of Spring over the past weeks and footy finals are in the air. I hope your team, like mine are still in the running. There has been a few cases of colds and flu like symptoms around the school of late and I hope that you and your family are in good health.

Building Project Update

Our building progress continues to develop at a steady rate. Over 800 tons of soil have been removed from the site and we are nearing at the end of major earthworks for this stage of the project.

The concrete slab area of the atrium has been poured and the concrete pilings that formed the major part of the earlier earthworks are clearly visible from Military Road.

The lift shaft pad adjacent the old downstairs toilet is clearly visible and is being prepped for concreting.

Over the coming weeks and months the builders will need to take access to the internal corridors of the McKillop building to make the extension of the corridors on both levels possible. There will be the need to move and decanter some of the classrooms in the Mackillop building and we hope to minimise the impact on children’s learning during this process.

I am pleased to report that the children have responded so positively to the building progress so far and have remained in great spirits. There has been much delight in the students watching the earth movers and trucks going to and from the building site. I ask parents to be mindful of building vehicles entering and exiting from the Military Rd and Seaview Rd driveways.

God is a Father; we are never alone.Pope Francis

At this special time, I can’t help but feel gratitude for all the wonderful men who have been and are present in my life: a wonderful dad, two brothers, a husband, three sons, one beautiful Grandson and a terrific Principal and Deputy.  I’m so blessed.  And so I would like to share this prayer with you:

Loving God the Father,
We thank you for the gift of our fathers and all those men who so generously take a caring role in our lives.
Help them to have strength when we need comforting,
wisdom when we can’t see the way,
patience when the going gets tough
and love at all times,
so that through them,
we get a little glimpse of how you feel about us.

Amen

Happy Fathers’ Day. May the sun shine brightly on your day and don’t burn the barbeque.

Final game of Football

On the weekend the Yr 5/6 students played their final game for the season and the final school football game for the Yr 6’s. Thank you to Ashley Place for coaching the team and John Martin and Josh Netschitowsky for assisting Ashley, along with John Stanton for managing the team.  I would also like to thank Dave Kuchel for taking on the role of Football Delegate over the last couple of years.  His support and guidance have been greatly appreciated.

Sport News

NWJSA End of season Soccer Carnival, Saturday, 14th September 8.30am-3.30pm at Jubilee Reserve, West Lakes Shore.  Players from Adelaide United and Adelaide Olympic will be there on the day along with show rides, stalls, etc.  Stay tuned for further information from your coaches.

With the soccer season coming to an end I would like to thank all coaches and team managers (sorry there are too many of you to name) for supporting your teams, along with Vania Dotto who has been Soccer Delegate this year.  Your support and guidance have been greatly appreciated.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the NWJSA Committee for all that they do for school soccer.  The committee is a group of volunteers who put a lot of time into ensuring that over 2600 students are awarded the opportunity to play soccer on Saturday mornings.  Along with the committee I would also like to thank their 2 major sponsors, Stannard Homes and Mortgage Choice.  It is the because of the kind generosity of these businesses that our students along with students from local schools are afforded the opportunity to be able to take part in Saturday morning school soccer at a considerably reduced cost.  Thank you to all for your support.
