Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,

It has been quite a busy two weeks of school since the last newsletter. Much has happened and a great deal has been achieved. This week our Year 6 students and staff left in the very early hours of the morning for what has now become the annual pilgrimage to Canberra. The Canberra experience aims to give the children an incredible learning experience and a chance to visit some of our countries great iconic memorials and places of governance. I am sure a great deal of fun and enjoyment will be packed into the three days and two nights away. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Year 6 teachers and support staff for all of the planning that went into the trip, and for the care and supervision of the students while they are away. We acknowledge that we are indeed fortunate at Star of the Sea that we have staff who so willingly give of their time so that our students can enjoy such memorable experiences. Well done to all involved.

Last Wednesday evening our Senior Band and Rock Band were invited to be a part of the Pulse Music Concert at St Michael's College. The experience also included the children playing on stage with the Zep Boys, something I am sure will be a lasting memory for all involved. Thank you to Tim Donovan from St Michael's for inviting our participation and to Cathie Turner and John Radcliff for their work and support of the children. A great night was had by all.

From the APRIM

“Never see a need without doing something about it.” Mary MacKillop

This quote from Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop was so wonderfully expressed by the Star of the Sea community with our SRC drive to assist Catherine House. It was quite an experience collecting the goods, packing them into our cars, and, with the Year 6 reps, delivering them to Catherine House. Mr Perry, the children and I all agreed that it was one of the best afternoons we had experienced, being given the privilege to meet with staff and a client of Catherine House.

Catherine House inc expressed their appreciation: “…I would like to sincerely thank you for your recent donation of the amazing amount of items from our wish list! For the past 30 years Catherine House has been supporting women who experience homelessness. We are the only organisation providing accommodation…we are full every night of the year. It’s important to know that we value and appreciate your support. Your generosity means we can continue to provide our services and importantly, continue to change lives.” Jaylee Cooper.

So, thank you everyone. The SRC know that we really support their youthful enthusiasm and desire to make the world a better place.

Colour Fun Run

Thank you for the wonderful response to the upcoming Colour Fun Run. The excitement is certainly building and the children are looking forward to the event. I can now confirm that the Colour Run will be held on Friday 27 September at St Michael's College. We will be walking down to St Michael's at 11.30am and the colour run will conclude at 3.00pm. Parents will be asked to collect their children from St Michael's in exactly the same way you would collect your children from Sports Day.

At this stage we have raised just over $7200 for the Colour Run with the hope of breaking the $10000 mark by Friday 27 September.

We are also calling for donations of empty 1.25L drink bottles with lids. Please drop them off to classrooms or the office.

A Colour Fun Run Q&A sheet #2 will be sent home soon providing you with further information regarding times, what to wear and what will be needed on the day.

Thank you for your continued support.

School Closure Day

A reminder that Monday 23rd September is a pupil free day as the staff will be attending a professional development day at the school with Professor Misty Adoniou. Misty is an Associate Professor in Language and Literature and the author of the book 'Spelling It Out' - How words work and how to teach them. Our school focus this year has been about a whole school approach to the way we teach spelling and Misty Adoniou is one of several mentors we have engaged with this year (Lisa Burman and Linda Clune) as we set about tackling the task of making spelling teaching more research based and more contemporary and systematic.

Misty Adoniou' s work is nationally and internationally respected and we are very fortunate to be able to have her in-service our staff while she is in Adelaide. I am very confident that the learning we make as a staff will make positive contributions to the way we teach spelling in the classrooms.

Please note that the first Monday back next term, Monday 14th October will be a school day and not a closure day as previously advertised. This is in lieu of the Mist Adoniou day.

Children' Variety Hair with Heart

Several weeks ago Anastasia Curtis took the very brave decision to cut the hair she had been growing since she was younger and donating it to kids with cancer and alopecia. Anastasia organised a fund raising effort through Children's Variety and went around to classrooms to talk to the children about her cause.

With the support of the school, her classmates and family, Anastasia was able to raise over $2000 for the Hair with Heart initiative. Anastasia and her family would like to thank the school for their support and encouragement and she hopes her effort will inspire other kids and adults to do the same. Great work Anastasia, we are all very proud of you.
