Fr John would always teach the children that Lent has three very important messages,

Self-reflection and prayer
Fasting and gratitude
Alms giving and generosity

It is with this in mind that each year during Lent children organise and run stalls for Project Compassion. The kids, with the help of parents bake cakes and sweets, sell old toys, make bracelets and do lots of other things to raise money.

So far the students have raised over $500. Well done to everyone involved. It is good to see that grace and generosity is thriving at Star of the Sea.

School Board AGM
A reminder that the 2019 School Board Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, 31st March at 7pm in the Marine Discovery Centre. Various reports from committees, including the school’s audited financial statements, will be tabled at the meeting. The AGM is also an opportunity to thank the various groups that operate within the school and enable the school to achieve all that is offered.

Calls for new nominations for the School Board and various committees have been emailed. I encourage you to consider taking on a role by serving on a committee or on the School Board. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained and the school truly benefits from your input and ideas. AGM booklets will be available on the night and will also be available for download from the school’s web site.

This year instead of a guest speaker, parents who attend the AGM will be able to visit and have a guided tour of the unfinished new building. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Canteen Announcement

Welcome to all of our new students and parents and welcome back to our existing families.

We have implemented some changes to the QKR app to simplify the selection process and next term even more food options will be available. If you would like to have some input into the evolving menu for the canteen you can contact myself or reception to put forward your suggestion etc. Dtaggert@star.catholic.edu.au

As the canteen relies heavily on your support to operate, we are urgently recruiting assistants to help out on a more regular basis, if you are interested in assisting for a few hours a day ie. either weekly, fortnightly or monthly this would be greatly appreciated, we ask that all volunteers, volunteer for only one day per week. Many hands make light work. Please contact me on 0419112106 or the office to put your name down. For our existing helpers could you also contact myself to update your details and availability to assist me with rosters.

We are struggling for volunteers on Thursdays and Fridays, so if you are able to help it would be very welcomed.

Click here for the current roster

We look forward to seeing yourself and the children in and around the canteen.

Thank you!

Smart Watches

We have a number of children at school with 'smart' watches that have the capability of sending text messages.

A reminder to parents that children with mobile phone devices and “smart” watches are not to use these devices to contact parents or friends during the school day.

Should children need to call parents they are to ask the teacher who will direct them to the office where calls can be monitored.

Your cooperation and support is appreciated.

From the Deputy Principal

Hello Friends

I hope that Term 1 has been a positive one for you and your family. I have been impressed with the vigour, positivity and good will that children have shown towards supporting the Caritas Stalls this term. There is always a big crowd of students gathered when a Caritas Stall is set up. Thanks to our parents for their support of these stalls.

Before School Duty
I extend a big thanks to parents for their support of ‘No Play’ in the playground before school. I also remind parents that the first staff member on duty in the morning on the grassed area begins at 8.20am. Please assist us with our duty of care by refraining from dropping children to school before 8.20am. OSHC is available if needed.

Sports Day
Our 2020 Sports Day preparations are in full swing with teams preparing their chants and health hustles. Many thanks to Kristen Victory and teachers for preparing the children for what promises to be a great day. As was the case last year, students will meet at the Henley and Grange Memorial Oval and be dismissed from there at the conclusion of the Sports Day. Exact times and meeting points for classes will be made available closer to Sports Day. Children will have the option to order a Canteen Meal Deal through QKR! only or a Sausage in Bread through QKR! only. There will be a Coffee Van on site for parents, which will also have some food to select from on the day. Sausages will be available to be purchased by parents and community members on the day.  I encourage parents to read the Skoolbag notices and emails as they are released for more information. We are looking forward to a great day.

Thanks and blessings

Coronavirus Information

I am continuing to receive updates from the Catholic Education Office regarding the Coronavirus and what the school would do in the event of a shut down.   Catholic Education SA have a critical management team which is developing protocols and strategies that will be provided to schools.

CESA have advised that all of our schools follow the advice and direction of the Australian Government Department of Health and SA Health authorities - this will be SA's Chief Medical Officer who has similar powers as the police to enforce action.  SA Health officials will contact schools if they even suspect there is an issue with someone associated with the school. We will then be under their direction for any action.  In the meantime, it is business as usual.

In the event of a shutdown, parents will be notified by a number of methods - email, sms message and Skoolbag.  I am aware that parents may receive multiple emails but I would rather this than have you miss the important information.

Toilet Cleaning
As an added precaution I have organised for our school toilets to be cleaned twice a day, at the end of recess and at the end of the day. Soap and sanitiser will be maintained in all toilets and classrooms.

Washing Hands Correctly
Teachers will be explicitly teaching children how to effectively wash their hands and to cover sneezes and coughs.

Flu Shots
It has been mentioned in the media that Flu shots is one way to protect ourselves from the Coronavirus.  Although this will not protect you from the Coronavirus it will help.  The Australian Government recommends everyone aged six months and over to be immunised against seasonal flu.

Influenza is the most common preventable disease in Australia, and while it tends to cause mild symptoms, it can also cause very serious illness in otherwise healthy people — and lead to hospitalisation and even death.

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect yourself, and people who get vaccinated are at lower risk of getting an infection (and developing serious disease) than those who do not.

This email is not designed to panic you but to be aware that plans are in place to ensure the safety of all students and staff at the school.

If you have any questions or information that we may have overlooked, please contact me.

Joe De Tullio

bully ing no way.jpg

From the APRIM

Jesus said, “Treat others the way you want to be treated” This is the scripture passage on the new “Bullying No Way” fridge magnet that you will receive next Friday. You may have older versions of these school magnet already on your fridge, but it is amazing how quickly things change, and now looking after yourself online has become very important. It is certainly different from having my plaits pulled when I was at Primacy School! We hope it will be a valuable resource to look at with your children as we celebrate both the tenth year of Bullying No Way on Friday and Harmony Day on Saturday.

Circus of Life will perform for us on Wednesday. Important cyber safety themes are presented in an entertaining way. “It’s okay to have an opinion and to have a good laugh but when does laughing at someone become bullying?” It looks at the consequences of posting on line. Along with our buddy classes we will try our own hand at some circus tricks as well as team building activities on Friday.

Wear a splash of orange on Friday to support No Bullying and Harmony days. We will show our solidarity together by wearing themed wristbands. Who has the greatest number of collected wristbands from these special days? Some of the older students like to wear their whole collection and it’s quite impressive.

Thank you for continuing to support Project Compassion and our Small Change for Big Change lent projects.

May the week ahead be blessed for your family.
Stella Foley.

reporting-absence.jpg

Reporting an absence

As of Term One this year, all Catholic Primary Schools have implemented a program to record absentees called SEQTA.

As with any new implementation we experienced some issues which we are now confident we have sorted.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to send an SMS to notify the school that your child(ren) will be absent from school.

The new system provides parents with 2 options to notify the school of an absence:

The 2 options to notify an absence:

  1. Call 8115 7400 and press 1
  2. Email us at absent@star.catholic.edu.au with the subject being ABSENT and provide us with the name of your child, their class and the reason for the absence.

If you email the teacher your child’s absence, please also let the Front Office know by using the same email address absent@star.catholic.edu.au

If your child is late any time after 9am they must report to the Front Office to sign in so we can record their arrival on SEQTA. Also children leaving school before 3:05pm must be signed out from the Front Office so the early departure can be recorded.

We apologise for any confusion and thank you for your support as we adjust to the new program.

Any queries please contact Vivian DePalma
