Music Count Us In

Music Count Us In is a national initiative celebrating music education in schools. At Star of the Sea we are very fortunate to have a specialist music program where all students can access music education. The annual Celebration Day was held on Thursday November 1st. On that day our entire school joined in with over 500,000 other children around Australia singing this years song, titled 'One Song'. Students spent a number of weeks learning to sing the song along with actions and there were even parts of the song where Auslan sign language was used. Year levels gathered together in their classrooms to watch the live stream of the event coming from Tasmania and when the countdown to 12pm started the song rang out through the hallways. Then at yesterdays Music Assembly we all stood together to sing the song one more time as a whole school. Click here to view our students sing together.

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Friends

Thank you for the many sympathy messages and condolences I have received from families and the children on my return to school last week. My family and in particular my mum, are very appreciative of your prayers and well wishes for the loss of my dad, Cosimo. I have been quite surprised at the number of Star of the Sea grandparents who knew him.

Dad had been quite sick for some time and recently fell and broke his hip and never really recovered. We were blessed to have had him for 91 wonderful years. As Steve Jobs once said, "You are loved when you are born and you'll be loved when you die. In between you have to manage." My dad had a great 'in between' and has left with lots of love and great memories.

School Ball

Last Saturday evening we held the bi-annual Star of the Sea Ball - 'Bright Nights, City Nights'. I would like to thank everyone involved with the night held at the Pullman Hotel in the city. It was a great night to be proudly associated with Star of the Sea School and the evening was a resounding success; both as a social event and as a fundraiser. Calculations are still ongoing but initial figures would indicate that approximately $19,000 was raised and will be a healthy contribution to the new Play and Exercise Equipment for the children to enjoy.

I would like to thank the two hundred plus ball-goers, those who donated to the class baskets, the wine wall raffle and for those who approached sponsors. To all those who contacted businesses for auction items and to all of the bidders at the live and silent auctions, thank you. You all helped to make the night successful. My thanks also go to the Class Reps who wrapped and delivered such magnificent class baskets, they all fetched good prices at the silent auction.

On behalf of the school community I would like to sincerely thank Janine Vella who was once again this year the driving force behind the Ball Committee as our convenor and motivator. This is Janine's last year as Damien heads off to high school next year. Thank you Janine for the many hours of planning, coordinating and liaising with the Pullman Hotel.

Behind every great Ball Convenor is a wonderful committee and a well drilled group of workers. I would like to extend my appreciation to the 2018 Committee -Libby Luey, Ros Stevens, Ryan Scott, Andrew McEgan, Elyshia Mutton, Emma Denehy, Robyne Leaney, Nuala Stanton,  Olivia Scheuffele and Deanne Stephanos . Matt Perry and I are most grateful for all that this group has accomplished and achieved. It is wonderful to see that the many hours meeting and the committed planning all paid off with a fantastic night enjoyed by all. Everyone is to be commended for an outstanding job well done.

At Star of the Sea we are truly blessed to have such generous and supportive parents.

Mission Week

Congratulations to everyone associated with Mission Week. At Assembly Mrs Foley announced that the mission effort and activities this year has raised $1500. What an amazing effort!

Sometimes we need to ask ourselves "What have I done to make the world a better place today?" Over the last few weeks, our children have done an outstanding job answering this question and many Catholic Charities in Adelaide will benefit from our generosity.

Thanks to Stella Foley, the SRC students and the Staff Mission Committee for driving this initiative. Well done to all.

Attendance and Punctuality

Teachers are in the midst of writing their end of semester reports and finalising assessments and projects so they have evidence and data to be able to accurately report student progress. Attendance and punctuality at school is extremely important if students are going to have time to complete assignments and be prepared for assessments. When Matt, Stella and I read and sign off on reports we are often struck by the correlation between school attendance/punctuality, and organisation and achievement. Children who are resilient, who see school as a priority, who are rarely absent and are hardly ever late achieve better and have better social skills.

Research shows that children with consistent school attendance learn more. If pupils are to fully benefit from the many opportunities offered to them, regular school attendance is vital. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year—a significant academic loss. Children who are late or absent can sometimes copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never recover what is most important, the discussion, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. While punctuality will promote learning, arriving late to school can also be very disruptive for the child, the teacher, and the other pupils in the class.

A child’s success in school—and ultimately in life—depends on having a solid educational background, one that can only be gained through punctuality and regular school attendance. When children grow up they will quickly learn that employers seek reliable, dependable and responsible people to fill employment positions. Regular attendance at school is also important in promoting social development and enabling students to keep up to date with the workload. Developing positive attendance and timekeeping habits at a young age will serve the child well throughout his/her life.

carols night.jpg

Hello friends

Yesterday we were treated to a fantastic display of musical talents as our students who have participated in music tuition including guitar, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, percussion and other instruments demonstrated their musical prowess at the music assembly. The junior band, senior band and choir also demonstrated their skills to the school. What a great show it was.

Term 4 promises to continue to be a busy one for all, full of learning activities and celebrations.

Carols Night

The planning for this fantastic celebration in our school year is well underway with each year level having selected their songs to perform to the school community and practising and choreography taking place over the coming weeks. Please stay tuned, in coming newsletters for the appropriate times for blankets and picnic baskets to be laid out on the Oval on the day.

I ask in advance for your cooperation in giving an opportunity to all members of the school community in waiting for the appropriate time of the day to enter the school grounds and lay blankets and chairs out in preparation for this fantastic evening.

A barbecue, churros, coffee and soft drink stand will be available this year for you to purchase your meal needs or alternatively you can bring your own picnic style dinner. The Star of the Sea carols night takes place on Friday 7 December from 5:30 PM.

Please note that this year the BBQ on Carol’s Night will be cooked and served by the Grange Surf Life Saving Club. All proceeds from the BBQ will go to the club. The Parent and Friends have decided not to run the BBQ this year following a very full year of fundraising, allowing our mums and dads to be present for the carols. Order forms will be distribute soon.

Children’s University Graduation

Congratulations to the following students who are taking part in the children’s university graduation celebration on Monday 12 November:

Alessandra Cutajar           Mia Luey

Alfie Haberfield                 Alyssa Scott

Niamh Morrison                Esther Morrison

Kate Thomson                  Gabriella Selita

Zsa Zsa Stevens

Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone's face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to comeHenri Nouwen

Thanks and Blessings

rememberance day.png

From the APRIM

“To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."

This Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice of WW1. Recently I read John Grisham’s new book ‘The Reckoning’ as a ‘holiday’ read, but within the book there was the unexpected story of the Death March of Bataan. Bataan, a jungle island in the Philippines, was the scene of unspeakable horrors that over 60,000 American and Fiippino POWs faced there in WW11.  It was so unexpected the effect this had on me, and as the mother of three sons I could not but help remember those who have given their lives in similar battles for our great nation of Australia.

MISSION WEEK

Wonderful news. We raised $1500 to donate to our Catholic Charities around Adelaide.

Prayer

Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.  But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Mk 12: 40 – 44

Shave-for-a-Cure.jpg

Today, 35 Australians will be told they have a blood cancer. Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping more Australians with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related disorders survive their blood cancer and live a better quality of life.

Elijah Kuchel (Year 5M) is taking part in the World's Greatest Shave fundraising event and will be shaving his hair at lunch time Friday 16 November. If you would like to donate to Elijah's cause you can sponsor him by visiting http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/elijahkuchel

Over the years we have had several students at Star of the Sea who have been diagnosed with childhood blood disorders and so this cause is close to Elijah's heart. It would be great if we could all help Elijah reach his fundraising target.
