Italian Carnevale

We held our Italian Carnevale Parade today and had a wonderful variety of masks on show. The children paraded and were entertained by Arlecchino (Darcey 6S) who did an amazing job amusing us with her antics. Thank you to the many teachers and staff who helped make the event possible. And a big thank you to all the parents and friends who came to support the event despite the warm weather.

Grazie a tutti!  Thank you everyone!

From the Acting Principal

Hello Friends

Here we are almost at the half way point of Term 1. So many exciting events have occurred since our last newsletter. Our students and families involved in Reconciliation have begun their sacramental journey, we have celebrated our first Reception Assembly and the Parents and Friends evening, 'School’s in for Summer’ was a fantastic night. My thanks to the Parents and Friends for their organisation and to all of our parents who came along. With another blast of summer weather I ask that students come to school with a labelled school hat. Children who do not have hats will be asked to engage in low level play in the shade. I also ask that your child comes to school with sunscreen already applied. This allows for the sunscreen to be at maximum protection for before school play and then sunscreen can be reapplied in the classrooms during the day. Please ensure that your child has a labelled bottle of water at school each day.

Clean Up Our School Day 2019

Friday 1 March, is 'Youth and School Clean Up Day'. Classes will be involved in choosing an area of our school to clean. This may involve sweeping, tidying, picking up litter, or simply packing equipment away. Given the forecast for hot weather tomorrow, these activities will be completed in the shade or at a time of the day that is the coolest. It will be a great way to demonstrate our school value of Respect and care for our local school environment. This is also a great lead up to Clean Up Australia Day which occurs on Sunday 3 March.

Pupil Free Day

Our staff will be working with Lisa Burman on the 8th March. We look forward to engaging with Lisa who will present learning around spelling pedagogy. As this is a Pupil Free day, I encourage those families who will require the services of OSHC to notify Laura Artis by this Friday 1st March to confirm whether there is enough interest to have this service available on the school closure day. May I also take this opportunity to mention that the following Monday 11th March is the Adelaide Cup holiday.

Calm mind brings inner strength and self-confidence, so that's very important for good health.

Thanks and Blessings

Building Project

Our Building Project continues to progress with a lot of work being completed behind the scenes with Architects, Engineers and Design Consultants. I have attached some photographs with shaded areas of our school indicating the building stages and the areas of the school effected with a time projection. As I mentioned in previous newsletters part of the school will have restricted access and other parts of the school will be 'no access' area at various times. We will plan for play spaces, pedestrian traffic flow and toileting where appropriate. Works that involve major disruption to school life will be aimed to be completed during school holiday breaks. Main entrance to the building site will be from Military Rd double gates. Deliveries to the building site will be staggered to allow for drop off and pick up times along Military Rd.

During this stage works will include Site Offices and Builders’ Parking occupying the hard court area of the school. Geo matting and rubble will be laid to protect the court surface as much as possible.  This will remain in place for the duration of the building process. In the first Week of the Term 1 holiday break, the current transportable Music room will be relocated to the South Western corner of the MDC carpark. Music lessons will operate out of the Innovation Space while the Transportable Music room is ‘reassembled’. Timeframe: Week 11 of Term 1 through the Term 1 holiday break.

From the APRIM

40 days of Lent:

As a child this was a time when we had to give up everything that I considered fun or delicious. Literally I had a jar that, if I was given a treat, it had to go in the jar. The temptation of having that live on my bedside table was huge! These days we still GIVE, FAST, PRAY but it is positive. We GIVE through action, we can FAST from things we would like to change eg guilt, impatience, intolerance and PRAY by finding God throughout our day and being mindful that we are loved as we are.

Project Compassion Stalls
The children understand and embrace Lent as a special time to do much for others. There will be a wonderful variety of stalls, run by students from Years 3 up across our Lenten weeks. They are excited to be raising money for children to have access to water taps, so they can go to school and other wonderful projects. Teachers will be exploring these stories in class.

WEEK 6 STALLS: SWEET HEAVENLY BAKERY

WEEK 7 STALLS: BATH BOMB AND CO, SWEET AND SOUR, SUGAR RUSH, & SWEET DELIGHTS

Stall holders need to be mindful of children with allergies and display their ingredients.

Please return water bottles of small change to your class teacher. The MSC Missions are very grateful for your support.

Ash Wednesday Mass: Mass and receiving the Ashes at 11:15am

Junior Primary will celebrate their own special liturgy earlier in the day, just as their classes.

Confirmation Dates for 2019:  Friday 6 September at  7pm and Saturday 7 September at 10am.

First Holy Communion will be at Parish Masses once students have been confirmed. Year 4’s will receive details regarding enrolment for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist early in Term 2.

From the Acting Deputy

Gee, I love Adelaide during February and March. The city is buzzing and there are so many festivals and events that you can enjoy as a family. My children love going to the Fringe and watching so many talented artists in a variety of domains showcasing their talents, not to mention the very interesting adult only shows on offer. School life at Star of the Sea is just as busy. We had a beautiful balmy night for our P&F show last Friday evening. It was well received by the parents in attendance. A big thank you to The Click, headed by one of our dads, Tim Donovan, who provided outstanding musical entertainment. We also appreciate all the work behind the scenes by our P&F organisers.

As we head into Week 6, may I remind you of our Shrove Tuesday pancake day on the 5th March and our Parish Ash Wednesday Mass at 11:15am for students in Years 3-6. All parents are welcome to attend this very important liturgical event as it marks the beginning of Lent. Our students in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will experience a liturgy back at school.

Student Absences

From time to time families make requests to take days off from school to travel interstate or overseas. New guidelines require the school to monitor student absences. If you have to take children out of school for 2 weeks or more, please contact the office to complete an ‘exemption from school’ form. For absences less than two weeks notification to the class teacher will suffice.

With regard to any request for time away from school please talk to the teacher to ensure your child is not going to miss out on the important events such as camps, excursions or national testing.

Our School Board met on 18 February. We are looking forward to our AGM which is scheduled for 2 April at 7pm in the Multipurpose Room. Lisa Burman will be our guest speaker for this evening and will present to parents a 'parent’ version of the work we will complete with staff during the Pupil Free Day. A crèche will be available on the night with details to follow in the coming weeks. This evening will provide the opportunity to enable parents to understand the pedagogy behind the work that is completed in the classroom and how Spelling can be supported at home.

Encourage kids to help at home

Confident kids are competent kids. Past experience has taught them that they can be successful. The easiest (and most neglected way) to help develop competency is to give kids opportunities to help out at home. Don’t overburden them with jobs. Sensibly allocate chores according to their age, interests and study requirements.
