Board Talk

21.11.19

Year 6s students Mia Xenikoudis and Massimo Vorrasi made their Canberra Trip presentation to the Board. Mia and Massimo highlighted the various components of the trip and explained their learnings. They also summarised their recommendations for future trips. The Board congratulated the students on their presentation and thanked Louise Santillo for her work in organising the excursion. The Board voted in favour of making the Canberra Trip an annual Year 6 experience and recognised the many benefits the children gain from travelling interstate.

Pino Dichiera from Edge Architects gave the Board a building works update. He reported that the completion date was on target for a March handover and that one third of the new building had now been completed. Pino explained to the Board the difficulty of managing such a complicated new build in the middle of a functioning school and this presented many challenges. He also informed the Board that there would be some unavoidable disruptions as the works progress to the links of the McAuley Building and MacKillop Building. Pino reported that the project is a significant build given that the school is building nine new classrooms, Music Room, Multi-Purpose Room, lifts, new corridors and verandas which will all be great additions for the students in the future.

The Board discussed the naming of the new building and narrowed the names to two possibilities, the Stella Maris Building (Latin for Star of the Sea) or the Sacred Heart Building (acknowledging our close relationship with the Missionaries of the Sacred, order of priests). They asked for the school to survey parents, students and staff.

Joe reported that the school recently took part in a WH&S audit which was a thorough inspection of the school’s WH&S policies and procedures. Joe formally thanked Leanne Cenzato who is our WH&S Coordinator and Mick Burgan the school’s grounds person for all of their work making sure the school passed the audit with flying colours.

On behalf of the School Board members I wish all Star of the Sea families a blessed and restful Christmas. Thank you for your continued support of the school and we look forward to all that 2020 unfolds next year.
